What is Conversational Hypnosis?

Conversational hypnosis, also known as covert hypnosis, is a form of hypnosis that takes place during seemingly regular conversations. Conversational hypnosis allows one person to connect with the subconscious of another person to influence thoughts, actions, feelings or behaviors. Conversational hypnosis involves pre-selected words, body language, gestures, and facial expressions to communicate with another person’s subconscious mind. The desired result is not a direct influence, but rather subtle suggestions that ultimately lead to the other person making their own decision to change their thoughts, behaviors, feelings or actions.

Conversational hypnosis, or covert hypnosis, is attempted by a talker that is trying to induce a near hypnotic state on a listener. The listener is not aware that the talker is doing this because the talker is using covert tactics in speaking and gesturing. When done correctly, conversational hypnosis seems like any normal conversation. This form of hypnosis is similar to indirect hypnosis.

In a typical conversation using conversational hypnosis techniques, a talker (or hypnotist) would become familiar with the listener and develop a method of connecting with their subconscious based on conversational cues. The hypnotist must be confident and exude this confidence in the conversation to build a rapport with the listener. The listener and the hypnotist will form a psychological connection through initial conversation, which aids the hypnotist in carrying out conversational hypnosis.

Using conversational hypnosis, a hypnotist can access the subconscious mind of another without the other person technically knowing that they are being hypnotized. Conversational hypnosis is used in everyday speaking, by motivational speakers, sales people and psychologists. This form of hypnosis is known to be captivating and enthralling to any listener because while they believe they are just having a normal conversation, they are actually opening up their minds to suggestions and cues.

Mastering conversational hypnosis can take a lot of effort and practice. One needs to build up the confidence and skills needed to have a conversation that induces a slight hypnotic state. If the confidence and knowledge isn’t there, the person attempting to use conversation hypnosis will most likely fail to connect to the subconscious mind of another. Because conversational hypnosis is one of the more subtle forms of hypnosis and is performed while the other person is wide-awake, learning about the subtleties and tips and tricks can take more effort than other forms of hypnosis.

To use conversational hypnosis correctly, it is important to remember that the audience, whether it is a group or only one person, must not be able to detect that you are using conversational hypnosis while conversing with them. Conversational hypnosis is only beneficial to you if you can do it covertly without letting the other person know that they may be in a slight hypnotic state. Once you are sure that the audience does not know that you are using covert hypnosis and you have established a psychological connection with the audience, conversational hypnosis becomes a viable means for connecting to the audience’s unconscious mind.

The goal of conversational hypnosis is to send out persuasive messages that are understood and interpreted by another person’s subconscious. These persuasive messages can be used to achieve many goals. The messages could be related to persuading a person to make a certain decision, to like a certain thing, to behave in a certain manner, or simply to feel a certain way about the hypnotist that is using conversational hypnosis. Often, hypnotists will use conversational hypnosis to convince an audience that he or she is an authority in his or her field before performing hypnosis. The subconscious mind hears the suggestions and cues from the hypnotist and does not analyze them in the same way the conscious mind does. This allows the subconscious mind to influence the mind’s actions, behaviors, thoughts and feelings in a deeper way.
